I've read most of Simon Green's books and this one is not one of his best.To be clear, Green has always been more focused on entertainment and quantity than quality but this book is below average for him.
His writing style can become grating over time in this book. He is continuously using the main character to tell us everything about every character we meet. Effective writers "show, don't tell" but Green prefers to engage in verbal diarrhea every time we meet a new character. Even when we listen to the main character's thoughts we tend to get too much laid bare.
The plot does not hold up to scrutiny. I won't give any spoilers away but it's clear if the main character used his powers on those around him there would be no "twists" that arrive at the end of the book.
It's also very odd that the author decides to pair his main character up with a characterless client who grows no more likeable as the book goes on. I got the feeling that Green was just using the client as an crutch to introduce us to the Nightside. Given what we come to know about the Nightside it's not a very plausible scenario and even more puzzling is how Joanna becomes something of a confidante to the main character. The element of romance between the two was befuddling as they have zero chemistry. Joanna's natural response to being saved of making sexual advances was cliched, outdated, and smacked of fairly one-dimensional sexism.
I could go on but at the end of the day the book is still entertaining and that's good enough for most of us.

Something from the Nightside is an interesting first book for a series. It caught my attention from the start, and after I read it I bought the second book in the series. The Nightside is an unusual place, and with some development I think this series will be really good. After the first book I don't really have any strong feelings for any of the characters, but I think that could change once they are more fleshed out. In this first book John Taylor, our protagonist, is very 2 dimensional. We learn a bit about him, but he does not really have any personality, which is kind of disappointing, because in the beginning it seems like he's going to be a great main character.
Other than a lack of character definition, the writing style is a bit YA; however the content is not. If you like urban fantasy, give it a try.
I recently saw an image on Facebook that covered different types of readers. I fit perfectly in the category of Neurotic Reader, which means I hardly ever finish a book. When I do finish a book, it means I really liked it. You can see where this is going, but I will say it anyway – I really liked this book. From the first paragraph I was hooked and it felt so good. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that this was recommended to me by Mike from you ain’t special (but that is okay).
What really stood out to me was the excellent pace of the book. The author used the perfect mix, for me, of telling and showing. I know that writers are constantly told to show and not tell, but sometimes, for the sake of expediency, telling is a better option. I feel this is, in part, because of the first person perspective, where it is easy for the main character to tell things rather than show. The first person perspective fits with the general style of a noir private detective novel and is used quite well in the book.
The characters in the book are a little more on the simple side, which is a downside from first person perspective. Character development, that is not the main character, is completely derived on how the main character views them. The main character definitely has his own colorful view of the people that populate the Nightside. Despite how simple many of the characters were, they all were unique and had complex history from living in the Nightside. I really liked John Taylor, even though I had nothing in common with him, I could still relate to his story and pain.
The character that stood out to me the most was Nightside itself. I often feel that authors miss the importance of treating the setting as its own character, but the author here did an excellent job of building up the character of Nightside. The city was a large tangled mess of darkness and misery, but still had joy and hope. Despite being a fictional place, I felt like I was there seeing the craziness as it unfolded, almost as if it were real.
I had a really hard time finding an overall theme for the book, but after quite a bit of thought, I came up with the following our perception of reality is formed by our delusions. The author wrote this in various levels of the book and did an excellent job.
I could not put this book down and when I finished I was quite satisfied with the ending. The author did an excellent job of wrapping up the principle story line but left me wanting more. I am highly looking forward to reading the rest of the series (11 more to go). If you like a good noir novel mixed with urban fantasy, you can’t go wrong with this book.
To be honest, I turned to this book to fill the hole left in my life by finishing The Dresden Files, and I was very disappointed. It's similar, sure, but it's similar in the way that sugar-free ice cream is similar to gelato. In both series there's a detective, he investigates stuff, he knows the ins and outs of a strange new world, etc. etc., but while Harry Dresden's world is governed by grit and logic, John Taylor's is all flash and no substance. The whole story takes place with one main plot, over the course of one day (basically - I know time probably moves strangely in the Nightside) and is extremely simple. I never understood the motivations of the main characters, and I found myself wishing that the side characters were running the show. The technical writing quality was fine (and definitely better than some of the other books I've read in my lifetime) but the book overall lacked complexity, depth, and drive. It didn't offend me, but I got to the end and was left wondering "was that it?". I probably won't buy the second book and I definitely won't recommend it to any of my friends.
Do you ever read the back of a book and just know it's the one for you? I found this book at a Barnes and Noble as a teenager and knew then that this book and this series was for me. I can't tell you how many times I've read this book or how many people I've recommended it to. It will always have a place in my heart.
